DID YOU KNOW THAT COTTON IS NO LONGER THE BEST FABRIC FOR TSW AND ECZEMA-PRONE SKIN?

In this article you will learn:

  1. What’s is Tencel® and why it became a lifesaver for sore eczematous skin.
  2. How it helps prevent further flares.
  3. Why cotton is not any longer the best solution when you suffer from a skin condition.

What’s Tencel®?

Tencel® is a branded name for lyocell that is produced by environmentally responsible processes from sustainable sources natural material wood including eucalyptus, spruce, pine, birch and beech.

These long and smooth fibres are fully biodegradable undersoil and marine conditions, and compostable.

No artificial irrigation is necessary to grow the wood, and the water scarcity impact of these fibres is 1.7 times lower than that of generic viscose fibres.

Why it became a lifesaver for sore eczematous skin?

Numerous clinical researches have been conducted to test the impact of Tencel® vs cotton on atopic dermatitis and all of them confirmed that Tencel® is a superior fabric for people with atopic dermatitis due to improved moisture absorption and decreased bacterial growth compared to cotton and synthetic fabrics.

To be more precise:

Tencel® fabrics are 100% more absorbent than synthetic fibres, 50% more than cotton + it eliminates bad bacteria in our skin, preventing skin infections and bad odour, more effectively than synthetic fibres and cotton.

On top of that, the studies showed that there was a significant preference for lyocell (vs cotton) for its softness, temperature control, moisture control, and wrinkle resistance.

As the matter of fact, I’m a happy owner of few pieces of clothing made 100% of Tencel® and after months of testing them on myself in comparison with other fabrics, I confirm without any hesitation that Tencel® is the gentlest for the skin of all those fabrics, doesn’t further damage the skin, to the contrary it soothes it and make it feel comfortable even on the most challenging bad skin days.

It’s easy to wash (machine wash 30°C) and doesn’t require ironing thanks to its natural anti-wrinkle properties (which also means no chemical needed to keep it nice and wrinkleless.).

It’s worth to highlight that I tested Tencel® clothes when 80% of my skin was covered in eczema, it was oozing and weeping, and it was pretty itchy. Clothes made of Tencel® significantly increased my comfort, decreased itching, and helped me improve the overall condition of my skin. Because this fabric is divinely smooth it doesn’t stick to the open wounds like other fabrics including cotton, even when your skin oozes. I actually tested this a couple of times as I couldn’t believe it.

Every time I wore cotton pants, they were sticking to my open wounds creating a great level of discomfort and stress. This has never happened when I wore pants made 100% of Tencel®.

How Tencel® helps prevent further flares?

It’s actually very simple. Because of the natural properties of this fabric listed below, the skin heals much easier because it’s not irritated by the fibres, it itches less, the fabric keeps it nice, dry, and cool. The seasoned Skin Warriors know that the key for the skin to start healing is breaking the itch-scratch-vicious-circle. Tencel® fabric makes it easy to achieve and effectively helps combat the urge to itch during day or night.

Why cotton is not any longer the best solution when you suffer from a skin condition like eczema or TSW?

Cotton is one of the most commonly recommended fabrics for people with eczema. Why?  Because it’s relatively soft and naturally abundant. However, it has numerous weaknesses:

- it’s prone to infestation by bacteria and fungi, that creates a great danger for people with skin conditions,

- has a crucial flaw in its structure -> it’s made up of numerous short stubby fibres that extend and contract as they absorb moisture or sweat-producing an abrasive rubbing movement that can irritate a sensitive skin

- it becomes stiffer and harsher for the skin with every wash

- because the fibres are short and stubby, they stick to the wounds, which means you need to soak the clothes off to take them off otherwise there is a risk that the wounds reopen and start weeping when you pull your clothes away.

Despite the above drawbacks, cotton is still better than synthetic fabrics or wool (except the Superfine Merino Wool) for eczema-prone skin, but it’s no longer the best.

Although finding stylish clothes made of Tencel® is still challenging, the good news is that more and more fashion designers include the Tencel® clothing in their collections.

Initiatives like RCGD (Red Carpet Green Dress™) Global Design Contest 2020 launched in partnership with TENCEL™ Luxe, will definitely make this divine fabric more popular in the fashion world.

If you decide to invest in this healthy piece of clothing made of Tencel®, always check the composition label because Tencel can be combined with a wide range of textile fibres such as cotton, polyester, acrylic, wool, and silk to enhance the aesthetics and functionality of fabrics.

If you have sensitive skin or suffer from the skin conditions like eczema or TSW, I would recommend you stick to clothes made of 100% Tencel® or blended with silk, to fully enjoy the benefits of this fabric.
